What I’ve Learned Using a CGM
I used to think I was doing everything “right.”
Eating clean. Choosing the “healthy” options. Avoiding sugar (for the most part). Focusing on protein. Drinking my water…well, usually not enough (lol). Taking my supplements. And still…I was exhausted, bloated, moody, and hitting that 2:30 crash like clockwork. I’d chalk it up to hormones, all of the kids, stress, or “just getting older.”
But something wasn’t adding up.
That’s when I decided to try a CGM…specifically the Lingo Continuous Glucose Monitor. I didn’t do it because it was trendy. I did it because I was tired of guessing. I wanted real feedback on how my body was functioning day-to-day…not just what works for someone else on paper.
And what I learned? Honestly, it shocked me.
What Even Is a CGM?
A CGM, or Continuous Glucose Monitor, is a small device you wear on your arm that tracks your blood sugar in real time. It pairs with an app and shows how your body responds to food, stress, sleep, exercise, even caffeine.
Originally designed for diabetics, CGMs are now being used preventatively by people like you and me…who want to get ahead of issues like fatigue, hormone imbalance, weight plateaus, and energy crashes.
It’s not about obsession or perfection. It’s about information. And for me, that information brought major clarity.
The Real Breakthroughs I’ve Had
Let’s talk about what I’ve actually discovered from wearing my CGM:
🔹 I’ve been dealing with reactive hypoglycemia…and had no idea. After eating something that spiked my blood sugar, I would crash hard shortly after. I used to blame it on hormones or lack of sleep, but the data showed me it was my blood sugar dipping too low after the spike. That crash left me foggy, starving, and craving more sugar or caffeine to “fix it.”
🔹 The order of my food matters—a lot. Eating carbs first (even healthy ones) sent me on a rollercoaster. But when I ate protein and fat first, then had carbs after, my blood sugar stayed steady. That one tweak helped my energy last hours longer.
🔹 Small movements make a huge difference. Something as simple as taking a 10-minute walk after a meal…or even just folding laundry or pacing the kitchen…helped blunt a blood sugar spike and bring it back down naturally. Movement became a powerful tool, not just for fitness but for healing.
🔹 Caffeine on an empty stomach is a no-go. Even if I felt “fine” drinking my coffee first thing, my blood sugar told a different story. Starting the day with a little protein before caffeine helped avoid mid-morning crashes and jittery energy.
🔹 Not all “clean” foods are good for me. I used to make smoothies with bananas, nut butter, and protein powder thinking I was doing my body a favor. But my CGM showed those smoothies sent me soaring and crashing. Meanwhile, eggs, steak, or a protein shake with no added sugar? Smooth sailing.
Should You Try a CGM?
I’ll be honest: not everyone needs one. But if you’re struggling with energy, weight, or weird symptoms you can’t quite explain—this might be the tool that unlocks the next level of breakthrough.
You might benefit from a CGM if you:
Crash after meals or in the afternoons
Feel irritable or shaky when you skip a meal
Struggle to lose weight even when eating clean
Are dealing with hormone or thyroid issues
Suspect blood sugar issues but haven’t had confirmation
Want to stop guessing and start knowing what works for your body
Final Thoughts (and a Gentle Nudge)
God designed our bodies to function with beautiful precision. But our modern lives…full of stress, processed food, and constant stimulation…pull us out of rhythm. A CGM helped me tune back in. It gave me eyes to see how my habits were helping (or hurting) my goals.
More importantly, it reminded me that my health is not about control…it’s about stewardship.
If you’ve been feeling stuck, or wondering why you “just can’t seem to get it right,” you’re not alone. Sometimes the answers are hiding in plain sight…we just need the right tool to reveal them.
And sometimes…we just need to slow down, humble ourselves, and let the Lord help us see what we’ve been missing.
